Camp Descriptions (Ages 11-17)

Summer Camp Logo 2016

The Old Pro Series - 9am-4pm (Ages 11-14): Join the “Old Pros” in these week long specialized camps taught by local professionals. Each camp will focus on specific topics to help your young actor or artist develop their skills and foster their passion. Each week there will be a theme to guide the activities, crafts, scenes, scripts, songs and games for that week of camp. Full day campers will be able to experience two themes in one day for a double dose of fun. Morning camps have a theater arts focus and afternoon camps work with visual arts. Final Showcase on Fridays for every camp!

Ages 11-14: Old Pros Series - Full and Half Day Camps (9 AM – 4 PM)

Week 1: June 18 – June 22

Musical Theatre Mayhem – 9am-Noon –What will it take to give your performer a little more of an edge? Musical Theater is all about becoming a triple threat! This week we will work on SINGING, DANCING, and ACTING to give your Rising Star the upper hand!

Stranger Things – 1pm-4pmThis week of art camp will be all about strange and unusual art forms. Using the new 80's inspired, monster finding, solving puzzles, hit Netflix show Stranger Things as inspiration. Everyday campers will have create art projects worthy of the upside-down and will have puzzles to solve in a fun and collaborative setting.

Week 2: June 25 – June 29

Disney's FRONT AND CENTER – 9am-Noon – This camp is for those Leading Ladies and Gents! We want you to take center stage in this performing arts camp using material from our favorite Disney shows and movies. Whether you want to working on signing that solo or recite an unforgettable monologue, this camp will leave you with the confidence to be the main event! 

Behind the Curtains of The Jungle Book – 1pm-4pm - The art of Stage Craft will take over the next week on Second Street. This week we will be working closely with the cast of BOSS CAMP to prepare their costumes, makeup, props, and set for the show on June 29 and 30. Campers will learn how to design a set and then build it!

Week 3: July 9 – July 13

Galaxy Far Far Away – 9am-Noon –Once upon a time in a Galaxy Far Far Away there were creative young campers that gathered for a week of fantastical fun! With special guest instructors from the UNCW Saber Fitness Club, campers will learn how to stage combat their mortal enemy, Darth Vader!

Magical Muggles– 1pm-4pmStill waiting for your Hogwarts letter? So are we! This camp will be for us muggles ready to learn some magic! Step onto platform 9 ¾ and travel to Hogwarts where we will make our own wands, play quidditch, craft potions and get sorted into Houses. Let the magic begin!

Week 4: July 16 – July 20

Broadway Mashup – 9am-Noon This camp will be for the Broadway lover! Sing, dance and act scenes from your favorite Broadway hits! This camp will sure to get your young performer ready for the next big show. The Friday's Show and Share will include full ensemble dance numbers from our favorite Broadway Musicals!

Behind the Curtains of Cinderella – 1-4pm The art of Stage Craft will take over the next week on Second Street. Week 5: July 23 – July 27

You’re the Next Contestant – 9am-Noon – You’re the Next Contestant will be an acting camp using popular talent shows to help guide the daily activities. Campers will learn how to audition in front of “judges” and how to think quickly on their feet using improv skills. Learn how to make strong character choices in this creative acting class to see if you have what it takes to be the next Creative Arts Camp Idol!

Orange St. Pottery Camp – 1-4pm – FULL - Our 4th Summer of Pottery Camp! Campers will learn the basics of ceramics in this afternoon craft camp! All campers will walk away with their very own completed piece of pottery. Supply fee of $10.

Week 6: July 30 – August 3

TACT preview camp – 9am-NoonThis camp will be perfect for your TACT performer. Campers will get a little taste of 2018-2019 season of TACT with songs and scenes from all the upcoming youth productions! Friday's Show and Share will be an as entertaining as the season itself!

Film Camp– 9am-1pm Lets make a movie! This week we will write, act and film our own movie and music video! The videos will be featured on the Arts Center Website and the short film submitted into the Cucalorus Festival!

Broadway on Second Street – 2 week Production Camp  (9am – 4pm)

This 2 week, full day camp will be an amazing opportunity for your performer to participate in a full children's theater production from start to finish. We will have a limited number of spots available. The first day of camp will be your audition and parts will be assigned before the 2nd day of camp.

Each day will consist of character development, music direction, chorography, staging and more. There will be guest instructors in order to enhance the student’s knowledge of acting techniques. Teaming up with local theater professionals makes this is a unique opportunity for both seasoned actors and new-comers to learn from the very best. The final weekend production will be open to the public with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7pm.

Session 1: June 18 – June 29 (Ages 8-16) FULL

The Jungle Book– (Ages 7-15)

The Jungle Book follows the story of Mowgli, a boy who has been raised by wolves in the jungle. When the wolves hear that the fierce tiger, Shere Kahn, is nearby, they decide to send Mowgli to a local "man tribe".  Join us this  summer  as we meet  tons of unforgettable characters and rock the jungle with songs that everyone will enjoy!

Shows Dates: Friday June 29 and Saturday June 30 at 7:00 pm

Session 2: July 9 – July 20 (Ages 7-15) FULL

Cinderella – (Ages 8-16)

The classic fairytale that everyone loves will come to life this summer on the 2nd Street Stage with an adaption of Cinderella. Cinderella, a once a happy young girl living with her mother and father, finds herself being treated like a maid by her evil step mother and step-sisters. Luckily her Fairy Godmother is going to help her turn things around!

Shows Dates: Friday July 20 and Saturday July 21 at 7:00 pm

Session 3: July 23 – August 3 (Ages 11-17) 2 Spots Left!

TEEN ONLY EDITION – This session of BOSS camp is for our TEENS! The campers will have the choice of 3 straight plays that they will get to choose from on the first day of camp. With special guest instructors from local professionals this will be a truly unique oppurtunity for our older campers. Campers will not only be responsible for learning their lines but will also learn how to design a set, make props, build a costume plot, and all the funamental functions of putting on a full length play. Come ready to PLAY and LEARN! (Ages 11-17)

Our Management

The Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center is managed by the staff of the The Thalian Association, the Official Community Theater of North Carolina.

The Thalian Association is a non-profit, membership organization founded in 1788 to provide arts education and bring the excitement of the performing arts to Wilmington. The organization has its offices and holds auditions at the Community Arts Center.  The Center also hosts the Thalian Children's Theater classes and performances.
