During WWII New Hanover County had 13 USO facilities and the 9th & Nixon was the only club for Black military personnel. The club was open from January 1942 to January 1946. The building was nearly identical to the Second & Orange Street USO except it did not have a basement. The club had an enormous impact on Black social life in our community. After the war, the City of Wilmington sold the building to the John H. Shaw Boys club, predecessor to the Community Boys & Girls Club. The wartime building was demolished in 1979 and replaced by the current Community Boys & Girls Club Building.
